The Canigou peak : an ascent that is being prepared
The Canigou is not just a walk to a viewpoint. The ascent requires good physical condition, suitable equipment and the habit of walking on mountain trails.
The difficulty depends in particular :
- from the chosen starting point ;
- the distance and elevation to be covered ;
- your experience and endurance ;
- weather and trail conditions ;
- the possible presence of snow or ice.
A summer outing on dry terrain and an ascent in snowy conditions are two very different projects. The advice in this article concerns hiking in favorable summer conditions, without snow or ice. In other situations, the skills and equipment needed change.
Before leaving, inquire at the tourist office, refuge keepers or a mountain professional. L’tourism office Conflent Canigó reminds that the ascent requires being an informed hiker, prepared and well equipped.
Which route to choose for a hike to the Canigou peak ?
The ascent from the Cortalets
The Cortalets sector is one of the main starting points to reach the summit. The classic route from Les Cortalets allows you to avoid the Cheminée, located on the approach via Mariailles.
The official hiking guide from Les Cortalets noted environ 8 kilometers and 4 hours of walking for the round trip. This duration remains indicative : it varies depending on the conditions, your pace and breaks.
These four hours do not include the climb to Cortalets from the valley. You must add the approach step, then plan the return to the point where you left your vehicle.
Even without going through the Chimney, this is a mountain hike. The land, altitude and effort should not be underestimated.
The approach via Mariailles and the Cheminée passage
The historic route from Mariailles is known for its arrival at the summit via the Chimney, a rocky passage where you use your hands to progress.
This is not a simple stone staircase. This passage can be impressive, especially for people sensitive to vacuum, and is not suitable for all hikers.
The Conflent Canigó tourism office indicates that the route passing through the Cheminée has not been marked since 2023 and that he cannot communicate about his accessibility. To reach Cortalets from Mariailles, he recommends the crests of Barbet or the GR®10. These courses also require appropriate preparation..
Check out the official information on access to the summit before choosing your route.
Do not engage in Chimney based solely on an old description or this article. Have the planned route and conditions checked with a professional.

The walk to the shelters is part of the hike
From the villages and authorized starting points of the massif, reaching a shelter can already represent several hours of walking.
To prepare for your outing, take into account the entire route, and not just the last climb to the top :
- the road journey to departure ;
- the approach walk ;
- l’ascension ;
- the descent ;
- returning to the vehicle.
Access rules and parking possibilities may change. Don’t assume a shelter is accessible by car : check the official information before leaving.
A day or two days : how to organize your ascent ?
One day, depending on departure and your experience
A hike to the Canigou peak can be organized over a day for trained walkers., depending on the starting point and conditions.
From the valley, the approach walk can however make the exit long and demanding. You have to leave room for breaks, fatigue and unexpected events.
Getting to the top is only half the battle : the descent is fully part of the effort. Build your program taking into account your ability to make the return, not just the climb.
Two days to spread the effort
Spreading the hike over two days can allow you to better manage the effort and enjoy the massif more.. A night in a refuge can be considered if accommodation is actually available on the chosen route.
Check opening times, reception conditions and reservation possibilities before setting your dates.
Pay attention to the work of the Cortalets : the renovation undertaken in 2026 modifies the usual accommodation conditions. A temporary reception has been set up during the summer season 2026, but we should not deduce availability all year round or for subsequent seasons. Confirm overnight accommodation possibilities directly before building your program.
The French Hiking Federation presents the arrangements for temporary reception at Cortalets.
Also for Mariailles, find out about opening, availability and the route adapted to your project.
Equipment and precautions before leaving
Good preparation allows you to enjoy the mountains without minimizing its constraints.
What to put in your bag ?
Plan in particular :
- of hiking shoes adapted to the terrain ;
- warm clothes ;
- protection against wind and rain ;
- sufficient water, without counting on unverified supplies ;
- something to eat and some snacks ;
- sun protection, glasses and headgear ;
- a map and a reliable route, viewable offline ;
- a charged phone ;
- a headlamp and a small first aid kit.
The telephone network is not guaranteed over the entire route. Inform a loved one of your itinerary and your expected return time.
Check the weather and know how to give up
Consult a weather forecast adapted to the mountains, not just that of the plain or the coast. The wind, the cold, fog and thunderstorms can change conditions quickly.
Leave early when conditions permit, set a deadline for turning around and adapt your goal to the state of the group.
Giving up on the summit does not mean missing your hike : sometimes it's the best decision. A discovery of the massif can be very beautiful without reaching its highest point.
In case of emergency, dial it 112, when the network allows the call to be made.
Organize your stay around hiking in Canigou
For a two-day climb with a night in the mountains, you can organize your stay in two steps, rather than keeping your accommodation in the plain during your absence.
Short stays of two nights at Domaine Pedra Llampada allow, For example, to combine :
- Two nights before the hike, to settle in, prepare your equipment and discover the surroundings.
- A night in the mountains, in a shelter booked in advance, depending on its opening and availability.
- Two nights on the way back, to rest after the ascent and extend your discovery of the Catalan Country.
You book like this two separate stays at the estate, no overnight stay charged on site during your mountain getaway. You vacate the accommodation upon first departure, then come back for your second reservation.
This organization remains to be planned depending on the availability of the area and the refuge. The same accommodation is not necessarily available for both stays.
Before booking, also check the starting point of the hike, access conditions and total duration of the route, road trip included.
