Natural spaces of the Catalan Country : 5 ideas for exploring the Pyrénées-Orientales

The natural spaces of the Catalan Country offer very different atmospheres : reliefs of the Albères, landscapes of Canigó, protected reserves, geological formations or Mediterranean coves. This diversity allows you to imagine a quiet walk as well as a day of hiking., provided you choose a route adapted to your desires and abilities. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
To prepare for your outings, here are five ways to discover nature in the Pyrénées-Orientales. The idea is not to multiply the steps, but to take the time to appreciate each landscape.
1. Explore the great outdoors : the Albères and the Canigó
The Albères massif, between mountains and Mediterranean
The Albères constitute a meeting point between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean. The massif offers foothill walks as well as more sporty hikes. From certain points of view, the view opens onto the Roussillon plain and the sea. (tourisme-pyrenees-mediterranee.com)
To discover this sector, Laroque-des-Albères is an interesting avenue : the tourist office presents family tours there, thematic trails and day hikes. Trained walkers may also be interested in the routes to Néoulous peak, without confusing them with a simple stroll. (tourisme-pyrenees-mediterranee.com)
Our advice : first choose your route according to its elevation and duration, rather than just distance. Before departure, consult the weather and any restrictions on access to the massif linked to the risk of fire. (tourisme-pyrenees-mediterranee.com)
Le Canigo, for a discovery of the mountain
The Canigó massif allows you to practice different outdoor activities, without necessarily aiming for its summit. An outing on its trails can constitute a discovery in its own right. ; l’ascension, elle, requires appropriate preparation and equipment. (tourisme-canigou.com)
For a first visit, it is better to choose a route corresponding to your experience and ask advice from the tourist office or a mountain guide. Do not consider access to the summit as an obligatory step.
2. Discover the natural spaces of the Catalan Country through their reserves
Nature reserves allow us to understand the ecological wealth of the territory. The network presented by the Federation of Catalan Nature Reserves includes nine federated reserves and two partner reserves, distributed between coastline and mountains. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
The nine federated reserves are :
- known ;
- Jujols ;
- Mas Larrieu ;
- the Massane forest ;
- Nohèdes ;
- mantlet ;
- the valley of the Eyne. ;
- Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste ;
- Py.
The two partner reserves are the Nyer regional nature reserve and the Cerbère-Banyuls marine nature reserve. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
Which natural spaces in the Catalan Country to visit ?
To organize an outing, start by consulting the file for the reserve that interests you on the Federation website. The landscapes, the possibilities of discovery and the conditions of access differ from one protected area to another. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
We advise you to choose an accompanied visit when it is offered. : it’s a good way to make sense of what we observe, rather than crossing a place without understanding its particularities.
Things to remember : a nature reserve is not a leisure park. Each reserve has regulations intended to preserve its habitats and species. Check the instructions before your arrival, particularly for authorized activities and the presence of animals. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
3. Observe the geological landscapes at the Orgues d’Ille-sur-Têt
The Organs of Ille-sur-Têt offer another facet of the natural spaces of the Catalan Country. Their sand and clay formations, carved by erosion, draw a landscape of “fairy chimneys” in light and ocher tones. (tourisme-pyreneesorientales.com)
This visit allows you to take an interest in the formation of landscapes, without organizing a long mountain hike. The tourist office indicates an average visit duration of approximately 45 minutes, to complete according to your pace and your interest in the site. (tourisme-pyreneesorientales.com)
Take the time to observe the differences in shapes and colors, rather than just looking for the best photo point.
Accessibility point : reception facilities do not mean that the entire route is accessible. The departmental brochure dedicated to adapted tourism indicates a hilly route which does not allow access to the route for people with reduced mobility.. Contact the site to specify the possibilities according to your situation. (tourisme-pyreneesorientales.com)
4. Enjoy the water’s edge : Paulilles and Raho Lake
L & rsquo; Anse de Paulilles, between nature and industrial memory
Located between Port-Vendres and Banyuls-sur-Mer, the classified site of Anse de Paulilles combines coastal landscapes, gardens and industrial heritage. This former dynamite houses a site house and a Catalan boat restoration workshop.. (ledepartement66.fr)
We suggest you plan an outing combining a walk and discovery of the place, rather than just stopping at the beach.
Paulilles is also of interest for preparing a suitable visit : the Department indicates that places of pleasure and buildings are accessible to people with reduced mobility, with the exception of the Vigie. Some trips may require human assistance ; check the conditions with reception. (ledepartement66.fr)
Raho Lake, for a walk near Perpignan
The Raho Lake brings together several water reservoirs and walking areas at the gates of Perpignan. The site combines leisure uses and an ecological vocation : it is therefore appropriate to respect the areas authorized to the public. (ledepartement66.fr)
We would prefer it for an outing focused on walking, a break by the water or a moment with family.
Attention : do not plan a swim without checking official information. Prohibitions may be imposed depending on water quality, as shown in a notice from the Department concerning the small lake. Consult the instructions in force and the signage on site. (ledepartement66.fr)
5. Change the atmosphere at Lac des Bouillouses
At the foot of the Carlit massif, the classified site of Lake Bouillouses allows you to discover high mountain landscapes. The surroundings of the lake and the routes in the area offer a very different setting from that of the coast. (ledepartement66.fr)
We advise you to reserve this discovery for a dedicated day, rather than adding it to an already busy schedule.
Access is regulated according to the periods, with a shuttle device. It is therefore necessary to check the terms and conditions before taking the road.. For people in wheelchairs, the Department provides special provisions for access by personal vehicle ; the shuttles are not equipped to accommodate them. However, this does not mean that the mountain trails are accessible. (ledepartement66.fr)
Prepare your outings in the natural spaces of the Catalan Country
To compose your program, we offer you a simple rule : one main outing per day, with a fallback solution if conditions do not allow it to be maintained.
Before each departure :
- check the official site information : opening, access and regulation ;
- check the weather and any restrictions in the mountains ;
- choose a route adapted to the level of all participants ;
- for a mountain hike, In particular, wear suitable shoes, water, food and protective clothing ;
- in case of accessibility needs, contact reception to specify the actual visit conditions. (tourisme-pyrenees-mediterranee.com)
Can you come with your dog? ?
Check the rules specific to each location before traveling. In nature reserves, dogs may be prohibited, even on a leash. The Federation reminds that their presence can disturb wildlife and specifies the exceptions on its page dedicated to regulations. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
So don't assume that an authorization valid on one site applies to the next.
Explore the natural spaces of the Catalan Country from the Pedra Llampada Estate
The Domaine Pedra Llampada is located in Villelongue-dels-Monts. For a stay organized from the domain, we suggest starting with the discoveries of the Albères sector, then plan separate days for the coast, the Organs or the mountain. (domaine-pedra-llampada.fr)
The idea is to keep a fixed point of stay while varying the atmospheres, without trying to cover the entire department in a few days. Alternate a day of walking with a more leisurely visit, according to your wishes.

Which outing to choose with children ?
We would prefer a short visit, with a concrete objective : observe the shapes of the Organs, discover Paulilles or choose a fun route offered around Laroque-des-Albères. The choice then depends on the age of the children and their habit of walking.. (tourisme-pyreneesorientales.com)
Which sites offer facilities for people with reduced mobility ?
Paulilles has accessible facilities and buildings, with certain limits. In Bouillouses, provisions concern access to the site and certain equipment. It is necessary to distinguish arrival on site of accessibility of the tour route and confirm the possibilities with managers. (ledepartement66.fr)
Can you freely visit nature reserves? ?
The discovery is governed by the regulations specific to each reserve. Consult the instructions before your visit : environmental protection can limit certain access or certain practices. (reserves-naturelles-catalanes.org)
Conclusion : choose your way of discovering nature
Explore the natural spaces of the Catalan Country, it does not necessarily mean walking a long time or making multiple visits. Instead, we invite you to choose a few complementary outings and dedicate time to them.
A landscape to observe, a visit to understand an environment, a walk along the water : create a stay at your own pace, respecting the places that welcome you.

Looks beautiful! What are the covid restrictions there? I’m looking for a place to vacation to, but I’m curious if I can have an “old normal” stay there. I’m not really into wearing face masks and stuff.

Hello and thank you for your interest request, depending on the period you want to come and visit our beautiful region. For the mask you had to wear it only when there are a lot of people, but luckily our region has a lot of natural places to walk with landscapes more beautiful than the others. Best Regards Laurent
